Dietary Review: Dr. McDougal

Dr. McDougal has implemented and explained on his website, in books, and in movies a dietary system that is claimed to help you lose weight, reduce dependency on pharmaceutical drugs, and become much healthier overall. His diet system is not only vegan (no meat, eggs, dairy, or any other animal derivatives), but also very restrictive of processed foods. In this article, I will attempt to explain his diet as well as cover posted reviews of the McDougal system.
The idea behind the McDougal diet is that heredity does not control your health; your personal diet choices do. This turns out to be good news because according to his website, fat and cholesterol are almost poison-like. “The problem with fat and cholesterol is that we need so little of both.” Meat-based diets provide an abundance of both, which proves unnecessary. Dr. McDougal even goes as far as to suggest that vegetarians don’t need supplements of omega-3 or flaxseed oils (a seemingly common suggestion when researching vegetarianism). Read more

About.com has an opening for a “Guide” on the topic of animal rights. I did some research into the position, mainly because I was interested. Since I’m not going to apply however, I thought I’d share the job opening with the world.
What is a guide exactly? Read more
Vegetarian Life Insurance Discount?

Is it a review? Well no, probably not. But it is very exciting news for the vegetarian community. Apparently a Life Insurance company in the UK is now offering a discount for vegetarians. Working much like the way you get a discount for not smoking and drinking, one company has worked in a discount for not eating meat. You can read more about it at the VegLawyer Blog.
Review: Morningstar Farms Products

Today I’m taking on the giant of vegetarian substitute products. As far as I know they seem to be the largest company, at least distribution wise, and most easy to find in non-specialty grocery stores. Most of the products that I’ve tried have been very good, which I’ll detail below, but I haven’t yet tried them all.
Firstly I’ll say that I was pleasantly surprised to find all vegan burgers from Morningstar Farms just a couple weeks ago. In the past, Morningstar Farms had only carried vegetarian (non-vegan) products so this is a nice and somewhat unexpected change. I had heard rumblings on various vegetarian/vegan message boards expressing the desire for vegan meat-substitutes from Morningstar Farms; it is very nice to see that the company is in touch with their vegetarian and vegan customer base. First we’ll start off with an article regarding foods that reduce the risk of cancer. The article is based on a new report from several well known Cancer research organizations and is supposed to be less influenced by politics than other reports (like the food pyramid).
Take a look at the article on the Veggie Revolution Blog:
http://veggierevolution.blogspot.com/2007/11/major-new-report-tells-foods-that.html
Next, there’s a new article on the Animal Writings blog called “To Meat-Eaters: Easy Ways to Reduce Meat Consumption While Retaining Your Comfort Foods, Part 7.” This is part of a series, not yet concluded, to help the omnivore casually transition to a more vegetarian diet. Here are the links to the various sections:

Part 6
Part 7
Lastly, Fat-free Vegan Oatmeal-Maple Cookies!
A new recipe has been posted on SoulVeggie that is absolutely delicious. I’d just post it here, but I don’t want to ruffle any feathers…so go check it out at SoulVeggie!
I guess that’s all the link sharing I have in me for now. So here’s a toast to 2008; may it be filled with visitors to the website, vegetarian reviews abound, and as many veggie treats as we can stomach!
Book Review: Vegetarian Times Vegetarian Beginner’s Guide

This is a book review for the Vegetarian Times Vegetarian Beginner’s Guide. I read this book when I first decided to become a vegetarian. It will alleviate many of your fears and concerns and you will become much more knowledgeable in the process. It will give you a much better ability to stand up against the naysayers and allow you to start to become a much healthier person.
Of course the book is not without its problems, but it explains reasons to become vegetarian in the beginning without preaching at you and also defends vegetarianism against common myths. Read more
Paid Review: WebHostingChoice.com

WebHostingChoice.com seems to be a quality site put together very nicely. The site has a directory of many web hosting with details for each hosts plans and incorporates user reviews seamlessly. It appears to use affiliate links to send users to the host that they decide on, but I have no problem with that; it is how they are able to maintain the site.
The learning center navigation on the left side looks to be extra helpful for those new to the webhosting world. It contains very good information on how to pick a good host and what the various specifications mean (ie. bandwidth, dedicated server). Read more
Website Review: GoVeg.com

GoVeg.com is a side project owned by PETA. The goal of the website is to inform the visitor of the benefits of a vegetarian diet. On the navigation bar, the site provides links to pages on cruelty to animals, health issues, and the environment. There is also an entire section where you can ‘meet the animals.’ GoVeg.com usually shows on the main page links to PETA contests, events, or other sponsored activities. Today it shows PETATV links to a ‘Lettuce Lady’s Video.’
In addition to providing information on vegetarianism, GoVeg.com seems to like to promote a free Vegetarian Starter Kit. I would review the contents, but I order one last August (2006) and never received it. This is not to say that its just a ploy to get your information, but I can’t argue that its not.
Book Review: The China Study

The China Study is authored by T. Colin Campbell, Ph.D. and Thomas M. Campbell II. On its face, this book attempts to use statistics and research to draw conclusions about eating animal protein through meat, dairy, and eggs. The conclusions drawn are dumbfounding. The research that the authors cite, seems to back up their claims at a huge problem with the diet of Americans and the western culture.
In an example early on the book, the author explains a study done with animal protein and rats. The rats were systematically fed various proportions of animal protein to test if there is any positive or negative response. Not to spoil the story, but it turns out that, in rats at least, high percentages of animal protein contained in the food consumed appears to link directly to high cancer rates and death. Whilst a control group was given protein from animal sources, these rats did NOT show higher rates of cancer and death.
